LFP vs NMC: What the two dominant EV battery chemistries mean for buyers

The practical differences between Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) and Nickel Manganese Cobalt (NMC) battery chemistries that matter to a passenger EV buyer.

How the two chemistries differ

LFP cells use a lithium iron phosphate cathode; NMC cells use a nickel-manganese-cobalt oxide cathode. The practical consequences of that difference show up in energy density (Wh/kg), thermal behaviour, cycle life and cost per kWh.

What it means for a buyer

For a compact EV used mainly on short urban trips, an LFP pack's cycle life and 100%-charge tolerance are practical advantages. For an EV where maximum range per kilogram matters, NMC's higher energy density is the trade-off manufacturers usually make.
